Tattoo Art: How To Choose a Tattoo Design

We have all heard about, and probably seen, poorly designed tattoo art.

These tattoos range from the mundane, a sailor with an anchor tat, to the hideous, homemade tattoos that are so badly done that the wearer is always trying to keep the horrid thing covered.

Clearly it is important to choose your tattoo design art wisely.

So how do you go about choosing a tattoo design will not become old hat or boring to you? It’s easy. Look for your essential self grasshopper.

Examine Your Character. Find What Passions Drive You

If you are old enough to get a tattoo then it is unlikely that your fundamental character will dramatically change as the years go by.

So the key is to determine what it is that makes you tick. Everyone has passing fancies like a boyfriend or girlfriend, a fad or some other temporary passion but these are not the kind of interests to base tattoo art on. You need to find your essential self.

For instance, if you are an animal lover now, if you wince and change the channel whenever there is a hint of cruelty to animals on TV, if you cannot pass a stray cat or dog in the street without at least offering some comfort, or maybe a home, to the poor wretch then that part of your character is very unlikely to change over time. The love of animals is one of your fundamental passions.

Or maybe you are fascinated by all things mechanical. For you a nut being threaded onto a bolt is not just an everyday happening. It’s a marvel of mechanics, of design, of precision engineering. The mechanical world is one of your fundamental passions and that probably will not change over time.

Of course your basic passions could be anything, words, writing and reading, elements of nature, trees or storms. Or perhaps your passions form around ideas, religion or philosophy.

Discover the passion or passions that make up your fundamental character and you have found the essence of a tattoo design that will make you happy for at least many years to come, and probably for your whole life.

An Easy Way to Determine Your Fundamental Passions

For some people discovering just what their essential passions are is a difficult chore. Sometimes a character forming interest is so much a part of us that we hardly notice it anymore.

One easy way to learn what makes up your basic character is to talk to close friends and family. Ask them what you talk about most with them when the conversation seems to be about nothing in particular. Ask several people and you’ll see a pattern start to emerge.

Once you have determined what your real, fundamental, character forming passions are write them down and start looking for tattoo art. If you base your tattoo design on the things that you care about deeply, the things that make you uniquely you, you’re sure to find tattoo art that you can build on as the years pass and that will make you happy all your life.
